Unconventional Skincare and Beauty Tricks to Try This Year

Looking back in history, we’re able to spot a few unique beauty tips and tricks. From pinching cheeks for a natural flushed look to bathing in milk, it seems that we as a society have constantly been looking for innovative ways to enhance our beauty. Beauty trends are just that – trends! They come and go. While some techniques have remained the same and are considered staples in a good skincare routine, why not explore the unconventional?

Try incorporating one or more of these unique beauty tips and skincare products into your routine. Who knows, by playing around with a few new techniques, you might just start your own trend!

  1. Bubble Masks

If you haven’t heard, bubble masks have been all over the internet for a few years now. A bubble face mask is basically a regular face mask that you can use to deep clean your pores and draw out toxins, but with a twist. The key difference between regular face masks and bubble ones is that this type of mask will start to foam and bubble after a few minutes.

This product uses the healing benefits of oxygen on the skin, inspired by how oxygen is used in skincare routines and hospital settings. Oxygen has been proven to increase circulation, boost cell regeneration, and increase collagen production in the skin.

Bubble masks work by reacting to the oxygen in the air once applied to the skin. This helps the ingredients in the face mask to penetrate deeper into the pores, leaving you with soft, clean, glowing skin.

  1. Preparation H Face Cream

Unsure of what Preparation H is? Let me explain it to you. Preparation H is a maximum strength hemorrhoidal cream. While it might sound extremely strange to use this product on your face, its active ingredients actually work wonders for your skin. Since this cream is a vasoconstrictor, meaning that it narrows blood vessels, and by doing so, it reduces puffiness and can temporarily correct any discolouration in the skin.

Kim Kardashian-West’s makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, admits to putting a tiny dot of it on her undereye area before applying concealer. He claims that it tightens the skin. I’ll buy whatever a Kardashian uses!

Another active ingredient in Preparation H is hydrocortisone. This ingredient can make your skin thinner and affect your adrenal glands when used daily. Due to this, professionals don’t recommend using it daily.

  1. Facial Oils

Many people struggle with excessive oil on their skin. This causes makeup to glide off and can even cause acne if not managed properly. To those people with oily skin: what if I told you that using a facial oil daily could actually decrease how oily your face gets throughout the day?

When your skin is overly dry, it over-produces natural oil (sebum) to compensate. By incorporating a facial oil daily, you are providing your skin with the moisture it needs so that it doesn’t need to overcompensate and produce excess oil. It also helps to soften skin and can reduce signs of aging.

In your search for your new favourite facial oil, make sure you do research beforehand to find a formula that works for you and your skincare needs. For those with oily skin, lightweight and non-greasy formulas are going to be your best friend. Oils can also help to reduce inflammation and redness if that is what your skin needs.

  1. Honey

When you think of honey, you think “sticky and messy” not “cleansing and hydrating.” However, people swear by it as a facial wash! While it doesn’t sound ideal for washing your skin it has plenty of properties that make it a great substitute for chemical-filled face washes.

It is scientifically proven that honey has antibacterial properties that clean your face, fight acne, and heal blemishes. Honey also is a humectant, which means that it traps moisture under the skin leaving it feel hydrated and soft. Additionally, it balances your skin’s pH levels as well as the skin’s sebum (oil) production. It is also used for its anti-aging properties in many cultures all over the world and throughout history. Lastly, it doesn’t have any harsh chemicals and is all-natural.

In order to get the most out of your new natural face wash, you’ll want to opt for raw and unfiltered honey. Simply remove your makeup at the end of the day, wet your face, and apply a ½ to 1 tablespoon of honey on to your skin, massage it in, and rinse!

  1. Multi-Masking

As we understand our skin better, it can become apparent that different areas of our faces need different products. One person can have multiple skin problems at once. For example, you could have acne on your nose and chin, but have dry skin on your forehead and cheeks. Multi-masking is great for this because you can treat areas of your face with the correct products exactly where they are needed.

Try finding out what areas of your skin are different from each other, and then doing some research on what that means in terms of what products you need. Most people are oilier in their T-zone so in that instance, a clarifying mud mask would be perfect in that area. Try hydrating under-eye patches alongside your multi-masking to ensure that sensitive area doesn’t dry out and cause wrinkles. By multi-masking, you can precisely and strategically fight all your skin’s problems at once!

  1. Pepto Bismol

Known for its bright pink colour, Pepto Bismol isn’t exactly considered part of a skincare routine. This over-the-counter medication is a mild antacid that works by protecting your stomach and the lower part of your food pipe from stomach acid. Its main ingredient is bismuth subsalicylate, a beta hydroxy acid that unclogs pores and fights acne. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and contains aspirin which is known to battle skin inflammation. Lastly, it can exfoliate your skin and promote a healthy glow to the skin.

In order to use Pepto Bismol on your face to get all these wonderful skin benefits, simply apply the product to the face with a brush, let it harden, then remove.

  1. Aspirin

Looking for an inexpensive yet effective spot treatment? Aspirin is anti-inflammatory and can be used on any active breakouts to reduce redness and swelling. It contains salicylic acid, an ingredient used in almost every acne-fighting product.

Take an uncoated aspirin, add a little bit of water so it begins to dissolve, mash it up using a spoon to form a paste, and then apply it like a spot treatment to any breakouts. You can leave it on for up to an hour until it begins to get flakey and dry. After that, simply rinse off the aspirin. This will immediately remove excess oil and dead skin cells from the area it was applied to.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Thanks to Pinterest and natural beauty bloggers, apple cider vinegar’s healing properties are pretty well-known in the beauty community. It can be consumed to increase metabolism, reduce appetite, and get rid of bloating. It also is fantastic for your hair and skin. By mixing one part apple cider vinegar with two parts of water, you can create a toner that will control breakouts and soften, soothe, and exfoliate the skin.

  1. Strawberries

This fruit does a lot more for you than just taste good and nourish your body Strawberries contain malice acid, which can act as an astringent to remove discolouration. This being said, the fruit can be used to whiten your teeth!

Combine mashed up strawberries with baking soda for an inexpensive way to whiten your teeth at home. Spread the strawberry and baking soda mixture onto your teeth using a toothbrush, leave it on for up to five minutes, and then rinse.

  1. Snail Mucus

This one may sound a little weird, but not uncommon overseas. Using snail mucin is common for Korean beauty brands, and is slowly migrating to North American. This trend is rooted in the fact that snails naturally produce this slime to protect their skin from the harsh elements of the world. Dating back to history, snails were even used in ancient Greece as a treatment to reduce inflammation.

Snail mucin contains allantoin, which has been proven to stimulate cell growth and heal wounds. It also stimulates the skin, increases collagen production, and fights against aging and sun damage. Lastly, it’s full of protein and water-soluble polymers that pull the skin back when it dries.

Beauty products can be found with this ingredient in them, so you don’t have to go find snails yourself!

  1. Skincare Beverages

Defy Pure Skin Hydrology has released beverages to make taking care of your skin easier, and tastier! 1. Raw Potatoes

For some people, no matter how much they sleep at night, they always have dark under-eye circles. You can combat it with under-eye concealer, but there has to be a better way to reduce the darkness before you have to cover it up.

Potatoes are rich in vitamins and minerals and have a cooling and brightening effect when applied to the skin. Simply refrigerate two potato slices until its cold, then apply the slices over the eyes for about 15 minutes.
